- Thyroid problems like an overactive or underactive thyroid.
- Cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or diabetes

How Blepharoplasty is performed
The procedure generally takes 1 to 3 hours under general anesthesia where incision is made along the natural skin lines or creases of the upper eyelids and below the lashes of the lower lids.

If incisions is made from the inside surface of the lower eyelid (trans-conjunctival), it allows removal of lower eyelid fat without an externally-visible scar. However, it does not allow removal of excess skin.

While initial swelling and bruises subside in a week or two, it may take months for the final result to become apparent. The results can be best appreciated by comparing before and after photos of the patients.

Cosmetic and functional results of surgery are affected by anatomy of the eyelids, skin quality, age, and the adjacent tissue.

Post Operation Recuperation
For the first couple of days, the incisions are treated by ointment to keep them lubricated. Iced eye pads are recommended by doctor to reduce bruising and swelling.
For pain management and prevention of infection, eye drops may be prescribed.
Head elevation is recommended to patients while sleeping to accelerate the recovery process along with medication for bruises and swelling.
Wearing dark glasses for at least one week is recommended to patients to protect eyes from sun glare and wind that may cause irritation.
Sutures are removed after four or five days of the operation. It is normal to have discolored and swollen eyelids for about seven to ten days and most patients report feeling "tight" or "stiff" during this time.
Sensitivity to light, excessive tearing and double or even blurred vision are some of the experiences reported by patients, normally which disappear on their own within two or three weeks.
Doctors advise against wearing contact lenses until the incisions have completely healed. Patients need to clear with their surgeon when it is safe to wear them again.
Patients can watch TV and read after two or three days after surgery and may be allowed to go to work in a week. Make up can be used to cover up the scars which fade away in time.
Patients should expect bruises and swelling on their faces after Blepharoplasty. It is normal and fades away in a few weeks once healing is complete. Scars that are left after surgery can be covered by makeup and will also disappear in time.

Non-surgical Alternatives
There are several non-surgical alternatives for patients with early signs of facial aging such as lasers, chemical peels, botulinum toxin, and dermal fillers etc.
While these techniques are effective, they cannot replace surgical treatments. Blepharoplasty, should not be confused with these treatments as it treats not only the tissue on the skin surface, but also underlying fat and muscle tissues and results are permanent with reasonable cost.
